with the GreenBOX®

Smart charging for electric cars – charging with intelligence

Electric mobility is more than just emission-free driving – it starts with smart charging. With the GreenBOX®’s smart charging function, you can use electricity when it is available at the lowest cost and in the most sustainable way. Whether it’s dynamic electricity tariffs, surplus solar power or grid-friendly charging times: our solution adapts to your needs and charges your electric car efficiently, cost-effectively and with a view to the future.

Discover how you can optimise your mobility with smart charging technology – and make your home energy self-sufficient at the same time.

Benefits of the Smart Charging function

Cost savings

Charging at low electricity rates significantly reduces energy costs.

PV optimisation

Electricity generated by the photovoltaic system is used in a targeted manner – for maximum self-sufficiency.

Grid relief

Smart charging times help avoid peak loads and stabilise the electricity grid.

Smart Charging: Intelligent charging for maximum efficiency

Smart Charging refers to the intelligent control of the charging process for electric cars – tailored to electricity prices, grid load, weather forecasts and the availability of self-generated electricity. Instead of charging the vehicle immediately after it is plugged in, the system automatically decides when and how much to charge. For example, cheaper night-time electricity is used, or surplus solar power is fed directly into the vehicle.

Furthermore, Smart Charging helps to avoid peak loads on the electricity grid by deliberately shifting charging times to grid-friendly periods. This not only ensures greater grid stability but also an optimal balance between cost-effectiveness and security of supply – a combination that takes the strain off both the wallet and the infrastructure.

Maximum efficiency with the GreenBOX® energy management system

The GreenBOX® detects when electricity from the grid is expensive*, when the solar panel system is producing surplus energy, or when the battery storage system can be used most effectively. The electric car is then charged precisely during the periods when it makes the most economic and environmental sense.

The result: lower electricity costs, higher self-consumption and greater independence from the public grid – without any loss of convenience. Smart Charging makes electric mobility not only more sustainable, but also smarter. Overall, this can reduce charging costs by up to 68%** when the vehicle is parked at home.

Practical example

On 25 November 2025, conditions were ideal for demonstrating how our GreenBOX® makes clever use of smart charging. With outside temperatures ranging from -1 to 0 °C and no sunshine, charging an electric car at 5 pm would have cost 38.31 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Instead, the GreenBOX® automatically defers the charge until 2 am – precisely when the electricity price is significantly lower. At the same time, the GreenBOX® is also charged to its minimum charge level between 2 and 3 am.

The result: 75% lower charging costs. For a typical charge of 11 kWh, this means a cost of just €1.05 instead of €4.20.

Smart Charging vs. Bidirectional Charging

Smart Charging optimises the charging process for an electric car – taking into account electricity prices, grid load and solar power output. The vehicle charges when it makes economic and grid-friendly sense to do so. The flow of electricity is strictly one-way: from the grid or the solar panel system to the car.

Two-way charging takes this principle a step further: in this case, the electric car can also feed electricity back into the home or the grid. It thus becomes an active energy storage system that contributes to self-sufficiency or grid stabilisation.
